Koi Out to Sea
Winner of the 2013 Austin Classical Guitar Society’s Composition Competition for Texas-Based Composers, “Koi Out to Sea” was premiered in Austin, Texas, by a 90-piece guitar orchestra comprised of students from Oklahoma as well as high schools, community colleges, and universities from all over the state of Texas. It was premiered as the opening to the ACGS Concert Series festival's final guest-artist concert performed by internationally recognized Croatian guitarist Ana Vidović. The score has since been copyrighted by the U.S. Library of Congress resulting in copies sold and performances by guitar class students and university and public school ensembles throughout Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Canada. In November 2019, "Koi Out to Sea" was added to the Institute for Composer Diversity's database for chamber works, an institute that advocates, promotes, and shares their large databases of diverse musical works and composers.
Inspired by Asian musical characteristics and the busy city of Austin, “Koi Out to Sea” follows the majestic journey of koi fish on their ride downstream from a serene pond out to the liberating sea. Written for Guitar Ensemble (4-5 Guitars - optional contrabass guitar), this piece is suitable for players of all skill levels, beginner to advanced.
